Startups do not need an agency. They need one owner.
Why splitting strategy, design, build, and marketing across teams slows small companies down, and what to do instead.
Most founders who hire an agency are really buying relief. They want the website, the funnel, and the growth engine off their plate so they can sell, raise, and hire. What they get instead is a new set of meetings.
Handoffs are where context dies
In the traditional model, a strategist writes a deck, a designer interprets it, a developer interprets the design, and a marketer inherits whatever shipped. Every handoff loses a little of why the work mattered. By the end, nobody owns the outcome.
AI changed the math
Tools like Lovable and Claude let one experienced operator design, build, and ship production software at a pace that used to need a team. The bottleneck is no longer hands. It is judgment: knowing what to build, for whom, and how you will know it worked.
What one owner looks like
One person holds the north star, writes the hypothesis, builds the thing, launches it, and reads the signal. When results come in, the same person decides what changes. That loop is short enough to run every week.
When it is not the right fit
If you need a large, staffed program with procurement and layered approvals, a traditional agency is built for that. For boutique agencies, startups, and product teams, one owner is almost always faster.
